Making personalised care a reality: The role of occupational therapy

In News and Updates, Value of occupational therapy by COT Editor

This short report identifies three key factors to enable personalised care:

  1. Focusing on a person’s strengths and balancing choice and risk
  2. Enabling people to take part in daily activities that are important to them
  3. Ensuring people stay connected to family, friends and communities

Occupational therapy has a lot to offer in delivering personalised care which focuses on prevention and wellbeing, both in health, social and work settings. However occupational therapists are a finite resource, to be used wisely.

As experts in personalised care, occupational therapists are ideally placed to advise on how to articulate the shift we urgently require from a medicalised model to a one based on personalised care, and to lead the development, planning and delivery of new services based on personalised care across multi-disciplinary teams.
